How to inject?

At-a-glance instructions:

?

Pen cap removed

Check your pen

?

Check the name and coloured label of your pen to make sure that it contains the right medicine

?

Pull off the pen cap and make sure the medicine inside is clear and colourless*

Attaching needle

Attach a new needle

?

Remove the paper tab from a new needle

?

Push the needle straight onto the end of the pen and push the needle straight on. Turn until it is on tight

?

Pull off both needle caps. Keep the big outer needle cap for later

Pushing button

Check the flow

?

Turn the dose selector to select 2 units

?

Press and hold the push button all the way in while holding the pen upright. The dose selector returns to 0. A drop of medicine should appear at the needle tip. This removes air bubbles and gaps, and ensures the medicine is flowing properly

Turning dose selector

Select your dose

?

Check that the dose selector is set at 0

?

Turn the dose selector to select the number of units you need to inject

?

You can turn the dose selector up or down to adjust the dose

Injecting insulin

Inject your dose

?

Insert the needle into your skin

?

Press the push button all the way in until 0 lines up with the pointer

?

Keep the push-button fully depressed and let the needle remain under the skin for at least 6 seconds. This will make sure you get the full dose

Removing needle

Remove the needle

?

Lead the needle into the big outer needle cap without touching it. When the needle is covered, carefully push the big outer needle cap completely on and then unscrew the needle

?

Unscrew the needle and safely throw it away

?

Then put the pen cap back on

*If you have been prescribed a premixed suspension such as biphasic insulin aspart, it will not be see-through. You will then have to re-suspend your medicine: Hold the pen horizontally between your palms and roll it 10 times, then move the pen up and down 10 times. Make sure that the medicine is uniformly white and cloudy.
