Working in partnerships

At Novo Nordisk, we believe that we have a responsibility to be part of the solution to global environmental challenges. We also believe that environmental challenges are often complex, and that it takes innovative solutions to make a real difference.

It is our experience that these solutions are often best developed and executed when working in partnerships.?

How we take action

To address global environmental challenges, we engage in a broad range of partnerships. Here are a few examples:

  • In 2018, we finalised a long-term solution for renewable power in Europe with the power company, Vattenfall. This solution will secure power from Danish windfarms to Novo Nordisk’s European production sites from 2020.
  • In May 2007, we signed a deal with the Danish energy supplier ?rsted. We pledged to convert energy savings realised at our Danish production sites into the purchase of renewable energy certificates from the wind farm ?rsted was building in the North Sea. This was a cost-neutral way to achieve significant reductions in CO2 emissions while at the same time helping to build the market for renewable energy in Denmark. In 2010, electricity supplied to all our facilities in Denmark was converted to renewable energy certificates.
  • In 2017, ?rsted, Novo Nordisk and Novozymes began converting Asn?s Power Station in Kalundborg from coal to wood chips and other sustainable types of biomass. This will result in annual carbon reductions of up to 800,000 tonnes. This corresponds to the annual carbon emissions from more than 400,000 cars.
  • Kalundborg has been home to Novo Nordisk’s production for many years. Together with local farms, municipal utilities and other companies, we are part of an industrial ecosystem known as the Kalundborg Industrial Symbiosis. The symbiosis is a closed loop: the waste product of one company becomes the resource for another. In 2018 ?rsted and Bigadan inaugurated their first jointly-owned biogas plant converting approximately 300,000 metric tons of biomass residues from Novo Nordisk and Novozymes into bio-natural gas and fertilizer. The new climate-friendly bio-natural gas can be used as a substitute for fossil natural gas and delivers significant carbon savings.?Read more about the Kalundborg industrial symbiosis
  • We joined RE100 in 2015. RE100 is a global initiative of businesses committed to using 100% renewable energy and working to increase demand for – and delivery of – renewable energy.
  • We have a strong partnership with the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group where we aim to strengthen the role of cities in the fight against climate change and poor health. This is part of our flagship programme Cities Changing Diabetes where we work together with partners to curb the rise in urban diabetes.?Read more about Cities Changing Diabetes
  • We recognise that the environmental impact from our supply chain is very high and currently constitutes of 90% our total CO2 emissions. Therefore, we collaborate closely with key suppliers to find innovate solutions that can reduce our environmental impact and ultimately meet our target to have zero CO2 emissions from key suppliers in 2030.
